AI visibility

AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, your brand shows up when people ask AI assistants questions. When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best help desk software" or asks Google's AI Overview "how do I add a chatbot to my site," AI visibility is whether your brand is named in the answer, how it is described, and whether a competitor is named instead. It is the AI-era version of "are we on page one," except the page is now a single generated answer.

Why this matters for AI Overviews

For a lot of buying research, the AI answer is now the first impression, and sometimes the only one. If three tools get named in ChatGPT's answer to a question your customers ask, and you are not one of them, you lost the consideration set before the prospect ever reached a results page. Unlike a Google ranking, you cannot see this in a rank tracker. The answer is generated fresh, varies by phrasing, and differs across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI.

That invisibility is the whole problem. Most brands have no idea whether they are cited, ignored, or described inaccurately by the assistants their customers use, because nothing in their normal analytics shows it. AI visibility is the metric that makes that blind spot measurable.

How to fix it

You improve AI visibility the same way you earn any citation: genuinely useful, authoritative content that answers the questions your buyers ask (see Answer Engine Optimization). But the first step is to stop guessing and measure where you stand:

  1. Pick the prompts that matter. The real questions a buyer would ask an assistant in your category, not your brand name.
  2. Check several engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI answer differently; visibility in one does not mean visibility in another.
  3. Track it over time, not once. Answers are stochastic and shift as models update. A single check is a snapshot, not a trend.
  4. Watch your competitors in the same answers. Who gets named instead of you is the gap to close.
