Google Search's generative AI feature that produces a summarized answer at the top of the results page, with citations to source pages.
More about AI Overviews
AI Overviews are a feature in Google Search that uses generative AI to produce a synthesized answer at the top of the results page, with citations linking back to source pages. They sit above the traditional blue links and aim to give users a direct answer without requiring them to click through to multiple sites.
To be eligible to appear in AI Overviews, a page must be indexed AND eligible to be shown with a snippet. That means it cannot use nosnippet, max-snippet:0, or data-nosnippet to block snippet generation. Google has confirmed that AI Overviews use the same crawler (Googlebot) and ranking signals as regular Search, so traditional SEO fundamentals still apply.
For website owners, AI Overviews represent both an opportunity and a risk. Pages cited in an overview can earn highly visible placement and qualified clicks, but users who get their answer directly in the overview may not click through at all. Optimizing for AI Overviews overlaps heavily with AI SEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): clear, well-structured content that directly answers user questions tends to perform well.
